W.E.B. Du Bois, renowned sociologist, economist and activist became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University in 1897. In 1900 Du Bois travelled to the First Pan-African Congress, then to the Paris Exposition where he presented his groundbreaking exhibition on the history of African-American life between 1790-1890.
The following visual displays of demographic data were part of Du Bois' collection, "The Exhibit of American Negroes” — in which he attempted to show (a) The history of the American Negro. (b) His present condition. (c) His education. (d) His literature. The collection included 400 official patents by African-Americans, at least 200 books by African-American authors, maps, a Frederick Douglass statue, and 58 hand-drawn charts and graphs, a sample is below.
