Francis Watkins Harper


Often referred to as “the mother of African-American journalism,” Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (September 24, 1825 – February 22, 1911) was a writer, poet, and public speaker. She was born to free African Americans in Baltimore Maryland and orphaned at age three. She was raised by her aunt and uncle Henrietta and Reverend William Watkins.
